CarSLAM – Art and the automobile

Automobiles have been a fascination by many, from the mechanics of an engine, to the body of design, and now to customizing to individual taste.  CAR SLAM will feature art exhibits, displays, large installations, and interactive activities surrounding the CAR.

Stroll along Main Street, between Lyons and 6th street, to watch on every corner a featured artist painting the front end of a Carmen Gia, turning the body of a 1960’s automobiles into an art installation, or catch the sharpie market artist customizing a hood of a vehicle.  Make sure to stop at every corner to visit the one-night-pop-up galleries, showing photography and visual art of automobiles.

The SOUND of Visual Artists

Check out these visual artists of SOUND at Art SLAM, this Thursday, June 6, from 7 to 11pm, in Old Town Newhall:

Pam Zamora

Local artist Pam Zamora will create her version of performance artists Nick Cave’s famous Soundsuits, a wearable fabric sculpture that is bright, whimsical, and other-worldly. The Soundsuit will be hand painted live on a model at the SOUND SLAM.

Sound Art Exhibit

The art exhibit will feature various artists inspired by sound and music.

“The Third Room”

Artists Colin Honigman and Andrew Walton created ‘The Third Room,’ an interactive immersive art installation. This SOUND activity is a light projection of the person standing in front of an Xbox Kinect camera, designing music with robotic technology.

Performances Inspired by SOUND!

Art SLAM, on Thursday, June 6, from 7 to 11pm, will be hosting a variety of performances inspired by SOUND.  Here are a few you won’t want to miss:

Adjoa Skinner

Ajoa Skinner is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose voice has journeyed from New York to Africa to Los Angeles to Asia and back again. She grew up in a family of musicians where everyone played multiple instruments and sang.

Alex Davis & the Ary Sisters

A unique folk rock trio whose harmonies gloriously recall Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and the Carter Family. Alex Davis & the Ary Sisters are thrilled about the release their first EP together, Will the Wind.

Franz Keller

The Tenori-On is an electronic musical instrument designed and created by the Japanese artist Toshio Iwai and Yu Nishibori of the Music and Human Interface Group at the Yamaha Center for Advanced Sound Technology. The Tenori-On consists of a hand-held screen with switches that are activated in a different ways to create sounds.

Tony Palermo

Live sound effects demonstrations by Tony “Sparx” Palermo, is a sonic showman who uses voice, music, and sound effects to create worlds before your very ears.

Industrial Plastic Ensemble

Join the drum circle and bang out sound with various size buckets, as drumming styles are demonstrated from African, Caribbean and Native America.

ARTree Drumming Jams

Drum with Mr. Fudale, a drummer that toured and recorded with the Drifters. He has performed on TV and with bands that have opened for Sarah Evans, Lee Greenwood, Glen Fry, and many others. He studied Jazz and World Music at CalARTS, and is a Remo Health Rhythms Facilitator.

Electronic Installation by AUGH!

Rob Ray makes site-specific electronic installations, wondrous public games and experimental videos. He has relocated to Los Angeles, CA from Chicago via Rensselaer’s Electronic Arts MFA Program in Troy, NY.

On Thursday, June 6, Art SLAM will be showcasing electronic, multi-instrumental, and sonic musical instruments to design and create SOUND.  Travel through the various SOUND spaces on the corner of Lyons and Main Street, in Old Town Newhall, from 7 to 11 pm.
